What causes CFS/ME?

CFS/ME is a physical illness based on neurological and hormonal changes, it is not a psychological disorder. An area of the brain called the hypothalamus becomes overactive and puts the body into a state of “red alert,” driving the body's systems to exhaustion and leading to the many distressing symptoms. The hypothalamus maintains balance within the body (homeostasis) by controlling:

  • Energy levels
  • Sleep cycle
  • Blood pressure
  • Temperature
  • Muscle function
  • Defence against infection

The overworking of the hypothalamus is caused by alarm signals generated by the limbic system (emotional brain). This happens when we ignore emotions and symptoms sent by our body to warn us of a difficult situation we need to act on. It is as if the “fear, flight, fight” mechanism is stuck in the “on” position.

Symptoms of CFS/ME can include:

  • Fatigue
  • Muscle and joint pain
  • Muscle weakness
  • Sleep difficulties
  • IBS
  • Headache
  • Brain Fog, difficulty with memory, concentration and finding the right word.
  • Poor immune function
  • Repeated sore throats and /or swollen glands
  • Poor temperature control
  • Dizziness
  • Visual disturbance
  • Sensitivities to foods, medications or chemicals
  • Sensitivity to light or noise
  • Palpitations
  • A general feeling of being "on edge"

Symptoms can vary from person to person, from day to day and month to month.  Each symptom is trying to get your attention - there is something your body is not happy with. Work with your therapist to find out what you can do to get rid of them. Contact Lyn for more information or to make an appointment.
